How to Check Your Telenor Internet Speed

A friend sent me a screenshot last week: 0.8 Mbps download. He was convinced his Telenor SIM was finished, or the tower near his house had given up. Turned out it was neither. He’d run the test on WiFi, from his basement, while his phone was backing up photos to the cloud. The SIM was fine — the test wasn’t.

That happens more often than you’d think. Speed tests look simple, but a careless one tells you nothing useful. Here’s how to check your Telenor internet speed properly, understand the numbers, and know when a slow result actually means something.

What a Speed Test Really Measures

A speed test gives you three numbers, and all three matter in different ways.

Ping (measured in ms) is the reaction time of your connection — how fast your phone gets a reply after asking. This is the one that decides whether your online game lags or your video call stutters.

Download speed (Mbps) is how fast data comes to you. This decides video quality, page loading, app downloads — basically everything you feel as "fast" or "slow" internet.

Upload speed (Mbps) is how fast you send data out. It matters for TikTok uploads, video calls, and sending files on WhatsApp.

Nobody’s numbers stay fixed. They change with the time of day, your location, and how busy the nearby tower is. So one test is a snapshot, not a verdict.

Before You Test: Get an Honest Result

A sloppy test gives a sloppy number. Take two minutes to set things up right:

  • Turn off WiFi so the test runs on Telenor data, not your home router.
  • Close heavy apps — YouTube, TikTok, cloud backups, anything syncing in the background eats speed quietly.
  • Check your signal. Run the test where you actually use your phone. A result from the basement doesn’t describe your rooftop experience. If you’re dealing with a generally weak Telenor signal, fix the signal first and test after.
  • Stand still for a minute. If you’re moving (rickshaw, bus, car), the phone keeps switching towers and the result wobbles.
  • Test at different times. A tower can be fast at 9 in the morning and crawl at 9 at night when the whole area is online. Two or three tests across the day tell the real story.

How to Run the Test

Method 1: Speedtest by Ookla (the easiest way)

This is the standard app everyone uses, and it’s free.

  1. Install Speedtest by Ookla from the Play Store or App Store.
  2. Make sure you’re on Telenor mobile data, not WiFi.
  3. Open the app and tap the big GO button.
  4. Wait about 30 seconds while it measures ping, download, then upload.
  5. You’ll get all three numbers on one screen, plus your server location.

You don’t need to create an account. Just run it.

Method 2: Fast.com (no app needed)

Open fast.com in your phone’s browser. It starts measuring download speed automatically, the moment the page loads. Tap "Show more info" for upload speed and ping. Nothing to install, works on any phone — handy if you’re low on storage.

How to Read Your Results

The numbers only help if you know what they’re telling you. Here’s the plain version:

  • Low ping means snappy responses. For gaming, this matters more than raw speed — a stable connection beats a fast-but-jittery one. If you play on data, the tricks for reducing ping while gaming will help more than any bundle upgrade.
  • High download means smooth streaming and fast loading. If your YouTube keeps dropping to 240p, download speed is your culprit.
  • Low upload is why your TikTok video takes forever to post or your video calls look blurry. Most people ignore this one until it bites them.

Here’s the honest truth nobody’s marketing department will tell you: above a certain point, more speed changes nothing. You won’t feel the difference between a connection that loads YouTube smoothly and one that’s three times faster — both just work. The number only matters when something is actually broken.

So instead of chasing a magic figure, compare your results against your own experience. If your speed is half of what you got last month in the same spot, something changed. If it’s always been the same and everything works fine, stop worrying.

Slow Results? Run Through This Checklist First

Before you blame the network, rule out your own phone:

  1. Airplane mode on, wait ten seconds, off again. The phone reconnects fresh to the nearest tower. Oldest trick there is, and it works embarrassingly often.
  2. Check you’re on 4G. Pull down the quick settings and confirm your mobile data is on and the network shows 4G or LTE. Some phones quietly slip to 3G.
  3. Confirm your APN settings. A wrong or missing access point name caps your speed or kills data altogether. Make sure you have the correct APN settings saved — it takes two minutes.
  4. Restart the phone. Clears stuck background processes hogging your data.
  5. Try a different spot. Move to a window or step outside. Concrete and metal murder mobile signals.
  6. Test at an off-peak hour. If you’re crawling at 8 PM but flying at 11 AM, that’s tower congestion, not a broken phone. Night owls already know this trick.

If every test comes back slow in every spot at every hour, then it’s a network-side problem — not you.

When It’s Time to Contact Telenor

There’s a point where troubleshooting ends and the helpline begins. Call 345 from your Telenor SIM if:

  • Speeds are bad in all locations, all day, for several days
  • Your data keeps dropping entirely even with full signal
  • An area you rely on (home, office) suddenly got worse

Before you call, open the My Telenor App and check your remaining MBs and bundle validity. Plenty of "my internet is slow" cases turn out to be an expired bundle quietly eating into pay-as-you-go rates. A quick look at your balance saves you a long call.

One last thing — if speed tests have become your daily hobby because you’re waiting for better internet, come take today’s Telenor quiz instead. You might win some free MBs, and that’s a better use of your data.
