Last month my cousin wanted the premium version of a photo-editing app. No debit card, no bank account — he didn’t even have Easypaisa loaded that day. He looked at me and said, “Yaar, balance se nahi ho sakta?” I laughed, then realized it was actually a smart question. Yes, it can. If you’re on Telenor, your prepaid balance can pay for apps, games, and subscriptions on both Google Play and the App Store. Here’s exactly how to set it up.
What “pay with mobile balance” actually means
It’s called direct carrier billing, and the idea is simple: instead of typing in a card number, you pick your Telenor number as the payment method, and the price gets cut straight from your prepaid balance. Works for one-time app purchases, in-game coins, and monthly subscriptions like music apps or extra cloud storage.
A lot of people prefer it simply because no card details go anywhere near the internet. For students or anyone without a bank card, it’s often the only practical way to buy something from the Play Store.
Before you start: 3 quick checks
1. You need enough balance. A Rs 200 app is not going through on Rs 50 balance. Take a minute to check your Telenor balance first, and top up if you’re short.
2. The Telenor SIM has to be in the phone you’re buying from — ideally set as the primary SIM for mobile data. Dual-SIM phones sometimes confuse the store about which number to bill, so if you have two SIMs, set Telenor as the data SIM before you start.
3. Expect a little extra on top. Purchases can carry taxes or a small service charge beyond the listed price. The final amount always shows on the confirmation screen, and the My Telenor App shows the exact deduction afterward. If the Telenor billing option doesn’t appear for you at all, the My Telenor App or helpline 345 can confirm whether it’s enabled on your number.
Set it up on Google Play (Android)
- Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Go to Payments & subscriptions, then Payment methods.
- Tap Add Telenor or Use Telenor billing — the exact label depends on your Play Store version.
- You’ll receive an SMS verification code on your Telenor number. Enter it.
- Done. Telenor now shows up as a payment option at checkout.
Buying something after that is two taps: open any paid app or in-app item, tap the price, tap the payment-method row, switch it to Telenor, and confirm. The amount leaves your balance within seconds, and you get an SMS receipt for the purchase.
Set it up on iPhone (App Store)
- Open Settings, tap your name at the top, then Payment & Shipping.
- Tap Add Payment Method, then Mobile Phone.
- Select your Telenor number and verify it with the SMS code Apple sends you.
- From now on, App Store purchases bill to your Telenor balance.
One catch: the SIM has to be physically in the iPhone — or a Telenor eSIM on the same device works fine too. If you bought the phone second-hand and the previous owner’s number is still attached to the Apple ID, remove that payment method first or your purchases will bill the wrong number.
What gets deducted — and what to watch
The app price comes straight out of your prepaid balance, so keep a buffer. If you’re eyeing something pricey, top up your balance safely online before you hit buy — nothing kills the mood like a “payment declined” popup.
Two things people learn the hard way:
Taxes and fees apply. The store shows the final figure before you confirm, so read that screen instead of tapping through blindly.
Subscriptions auto-renew. A “free trial” that asked for a payment method will start charging the day the trial ends. Once a month, review your subscriptions and cancel subscriptions you no longer use — your future self will thank you.
When it doesn’t work: quick fixes
The Telenor option is missing from payment methods. Check that the Telenor SIM is inserted and selected for mobile data, then restart the phone. Still missing? The My Telenor App or helpline 345 can confirm whether carrier billing is active on your number.
Payment declined. Nine times out of ten, it’s low balance. Check your Telenor balance, recharge, and try again.
No verification SMS arriving. Toggle airplane mode on and off, make sure you have signal, and check that you haven’t blocked promotional or service SMS on the number.
Keep one-tap purchases under control
Honest advice: once this is set up, buying takes two taps — which is great until your kid figures it out. Turn on purchase authentication before handing the phone to anyone small: on Android, Play Store → Settings → Authentication → Require authentication for purchases; on iPhone, Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → iTunes & App Store Purchases.
Set that up first, not after the first surprise deduction. And if you ever want to stop using it, removing the payment method is the same path in reverse — no call center needed.
