Set a Mobile Data Limit on Android for Your Telenor SIM

Here’s a scene you probably know too well: it’s the 18th of the month, your Telenor bundle still has two weeks left to run, and your phone suddenly tells you mobile data is almost finished. Everyone’s first instinct is to blame the network. But nine times out of ten, the MBs quietly went to background updates, auto-playing videos, and apps you never even opened that day.

Your Phone Already Has a Built-in Safety Net

Good news: Android has had a data warning and data limit setting for years, and it takes about two minutes to turn on. You set two numbers — a warning that nudges you, and a hard limit that switches mobile data off when it’s crossed. No extra app, no root, nothing to install. If you recharge the same bundle every month, which most of us do, this one setting kills the 18th-of-the-month surprise for good.

How to Set the Data Limit (Two Minutes)

  1. Open Settings, then go to Network & internet. On some phones (Samsung, Xiaomi) it may be called Connections or SIMs & mobile network.
  2. Tap your Telenor SIM, then look for Data warning & limit — sometimes it’s under a gear icon inside the data usage screen.
  3. Turn on Set data warning and type a number around 70–75% of your bundle. This is your early alarm.
  4. Turn on Set data limit and enter your full bundle size. That’s it.

Menu names change a bit between Android versions, but every modern Android phone has these two switches somewhere near the mobile data settings. If you’re still figuring out how much data you actually need each week, read that first — the numbers you pick here only work if they’re honest.

Pick Numbers That Fit Your Bundle, Not Random Ones

A limit that’s too high won’t warn you in time; too low and you’ll be turning data back on every other day. The simplest formula: warning at roughly three-quarters of your bundle, limit at the full amount. Weekly 6 GB bundle? Warning around 4–4.5 GB, limit at 6 GB. Monthly 25 GB? Warning near 18 GB, limit at 25. And here’s the part people skip: set the billing cycle start date on the same screen to the day your bundle renews, otherwise the phone counts a calendar month while Telenor counts from your recharge day, and the two will never agree.

What Actually Happens When You Hit the Limit

Two things, and only two: you get a notification, and mobile data switches off for your SIM. Wi-Fi keeps working normally — it only cuts cellular data. If you’re mid-something important, you can flip mobile data back on manually in a few seconds. No penalty, no charge, no call to the helpline. The point isn’t to lock yourself out; it’s that the phone now makes you decide to spend the last MBs instead of losing them silently to background apps.

Make the Limit Work Harder: Two Extra Tricks

First, keep an eye on the real numbers in the My Telenor App — check your remaining MBs there once a week and compare with what Android reports. The app’s figure is the official one; if the two drift apart, trust the app and adjust your limit.

Second, starve the hungriest apps directly. In the same data usage screen, tap any app with a suspiciously big number and toggle Restrict background data. Do this for two or three apps and your limit will suddenly feel twice as generous. Our guide on 10 practical ways to save mobile data on Android walks through this app-by-app, and several of those settings save battery and data at the same time, which is a nice bonus.

Set It Once, Forget It

Honestly, this is one of those settings you configure in two minutes and never think about again — until the month your friend’s data dies on the 20th and yours doesn’t. Pair it with a quick weekly glance at your usage and you’ll stop being surprised by empty bundles. And while you’re here, don’t forget to play today’s Telenor quiz — free MBs are the best kind.
