How to Activate 4G on Your Telenor SIM

A few weeks back, my cousin kept complaining his “net is slow” — pages crawling, videos buffering every five seconds. I asked him one simple question: bhai, is your phone even on 4G? Turns out it wasn’t. Two minutes of settings later and he was flying. If your Telenor SIM feels stuck in the slow lane, this guide is for you.

First, Make Sure Your SIM Actually Supports 4G

Not every SIM in circulation is 4G-ready. If your SIM is several years old, there’s a decent chance it’s a 3G-era card, and no setting on earth will give you 4G speeds on it. The easiest check: look at the back of the SIM or its packaging — newer ones usually say 4G. Not sure? Open the My Telenor App and look at your account details, or check your SIM registration status — while you’re at it, that confirms your SIM is properly registered in your name too.

Check That Your Phone Can Handle 4G

This sounds obvious, but a surprising number of people skip it. Go to your phone’s specifications (or just look at the box) and confirm it supports LTE/4G bands. Most phones sold in Pakistan in the last six or seven years do, but very old budget handsets might top out at 3G. If your phone can’t do 4G, activating it on the SIM won’t change anything — the phone is the bottleneck.

Turn On 4G in Your Phone Settings

On most phones, 4G is already the default network mode, but sometimes it gets switched — a phone reset, a shopkeeper “fixing” something, or a power-saving mode can drop you back to 3G.

Android:

  1. Open Settings, then go to Network & Internet (on some phones it’s Connections or SIM & Network).
  2. Tap your Telenor SIM, then look for Preferred network type or Network mode.
  3. Select 4G/3G/2G (auto) or LTE preferred — anything with 4G or LTE in it.
  4. Toggle mobile data off and back on, then wait a few seconds for the signal icon to change.

iPhone:

  1. Open Settings, then Cellular (or Mobile Data), then Cellular Data Options.
  2. Tap Voice & Data and select 4G or LTE.
  3. Make sure the LTE switch is on, then toggle mobile data off and on once.

Give the phone half a minute. You should see the little “4G” or “LTE” badge pop up next to your signal bars. If it appears and websites load — congratulations, that’s it. The whole thing takes less time than making chai.

How to Know 4G Is Actually Working

The signal icon is your first clue: 4G or LTE next to the bars means you’re connected on the faster network. For a real check, open your browser and load a heavy page, or play a short video — it should start noticeably quicker than before. If you want numbers, run a speed test from any free speed-test app; 4G in most Pakistani cities gives you several times the speed of 3G, and you’ll feel the difference instantly.

Data Connects but Pages Won’t Load? Check Your APN

Sometimes 4G shows up on the icon but nothing actually loads. Nine times out of ten, that’s an internet settings problem, not a 4G problem. Your phone needs the correct APN settings to route data through Telenor’s network. I covered the full setup — both Android and iPhone — in my guide to enter the correct APN settings, so run through those steps and your data should start flowing properly.

Still No 4G? Work Through These Usual Suspects

  • Coverage: 4G needs a 4G tower nearby. In some villages and far-flung areas, only 3G reaches. Move to a different spot — even going upstairs or stepping outside can help — and check again.
  • Airplane mode hangover: if you recently toggled airplane mode, the phone sometimes reconnects on a slower band. Toggle airplane mode on, wait ten seconds, turn it off, and let it reconnect fresh.
  • Old SIM card: as mentioned above, an ancient SIM may simply not be 4G-capable. Telenor franchises can swap it for a 4G SIM while keeping your number — take your original CNIC along.
  • Software updates: an outdated phone OS can cause weird network behavior. Check for a system update and install it.
  • A genuinely broken setting: if mobile data still won’t connect at all, walk through the fixes in my mobile data troubleshooting guide — most “no internet” problems are one of nine common culprits.

Do You Need to “Activate” Anything on Telenor’s Side?

Honestly? Usually not. For most users, 4G activates automatically once the SIM and phone both support it and the network mode is set right — there’s no subscription to buy and no waiting period. If you’ve done everything above and 4G still won’t appear after a day or so, that’s the point to talk to Telenor directly: call helpline 345 from your Telenor number or visit a nearby franchise with your CNIC, and they’ll check whether 4G is enabled on your line.

One Last Thing — Keep an Eye on Your Data Usage

4G is fast, and fast internet has a side effect: it eats through your MBs quicker than 3G ever did, because videos auto-play in higher quality and apps update in the background. Once you’re on 4G, it’s worth learning how to check your remaining MBs regularly so you don’t burn through a bundle in a week. A faster connection is only fun when it doesn’t run out mid-month.

Switching to 4G is one of those small upgrades that makes your whole phone feel new again. And if you’re here for the rewards side of things, don’t forget to try today’s Telenor quiz while your speedy connection lasts — free MBs are free MBs.
