You know that message that pops up right in the middle of your screen — no notification shade, no warning — and refuses to go away until you tap something? That’s flash SMS. On a Telenor SIM it usually shows up as a promo or service alert, and honestly, it picks the worst possible moments. Mid-game, mid-video call, mid-typing — there it is.
The good news: you don’t have to live with it. Here’s how to turn flash SMS off on your Telenor SIM, using whichever method is easiest for you.
What flash SMS actually is
Flash SMS (also called Class 0 messages) is a special type of text message that displays directly on your screen instead of landing in your inbox. It was originally designed for urgent alerts, but operators also use it for promotions and service messages. That’s why it feels so intrusive — it bypasses your normal notification settings completely.
One important thing to understand: flash SMS is different from regular promotional SMS. If your problem is marketing texts piling up in your inbox, the fix for that is different — we’ve covered blocking regular promotional SMS separately, and that guide is worth a read if inbox spam is your issue.
Method 1: Turn it off from SIM Toolkit (fastest)
Most Android phones have a built-in app called SIM Toolkit (sometimes it shows up as “SIM Menu” or under your operator’s name). This is where Telenor’s SIM-level services live, including flash SMS.
- Open your app drawer and look for SIM Toolkit. On some phones it’s buried in Settings under SIM or Mobile Network.
- Select your Telenor SIM (skip this step if you only use one SIM).
- Look through the menu for something like Telenor Info, Flash, or Telenor Services — the exact name varies by SIM.
- Inside, find Flash SMS (it may say “Flash” or “Popup messages”).
- Choose Deactivate or Off and confirm.
That’s it. The pop-ups should stop from that point on. Menu names differ a bit between phone brands, so if you can’t find the exact labels, just browse the SIM Toolkit menus — the option is usually only one or two taps deep.
iPhone users: iOS doesn’t expose SIM Toolkit menus the same way Android does. If you’re on an iPhone, skip to Method 3 or 4 below.
Method 2: Use the opt-out option in the message itself
Some flash messages include an option like “Reply STOP to unsubscribe” or a small settings link at the bottom of the pop-up. If yours does, use it — it’s the fastest fix when it works.
Just be a little careful here: only use this for messages that are clearly from Telenor itself. If a flash message looks odd — strange sender name, a link you don’t recognize, or a prize claim — don’t tap anything inside it. Dismiss it and move to the next method instead.
Method 3: Check the My Telenor App
The My Telenor App has notification and preference settings that cover some operator messages. Open the app, head to the settings or profile section, and look for notification preferences or marketing communication options. Turning off promotional communication there won’t disable true SIM-level flash messages, but it cuts down the marketing messages that often arrive alongside them — and it’s worth doing anyway since you’re already in the app.
If you’ve never explored the app’s settings properly, it’s a good time. Most people only open it to check balance and never touch the preferences section.
Method 4: Ask Telenor directly (345 or a franchise)
If the messages keep coming after trying the steps above, let Telenor handle it. You have two solid options:
- Call 345 from your Telenor number and ask the agent to disable flash/promotional messages on your SIM. It’s a routine request — they hear it all the time.
- Visit a Telenor franchise or service center and ask them to do it. If you’re already going there for something else (SIM replacement, biometric verification), just add this to the list.
For a full rundown of every way to reach them, see our guide on contacting Telenor customer care — it covers call timings, the app chat, and what to have ready before you call.
Why they sometimes come back
Here’s the honest part: on some SIMs, flash SMS can re-enable itself after a SIM swap, a phone reset, or when Telenor updates its SIM services. If the pop-ups return after a few months, just run through Method 1 again — it takes under a minute once you know where the setting is.
Also worth knowing: flash messages occasionally carry subscription offers. If you ever tapped “OK” on one without reading carefully, double-check that you didn’t accidentally subscribe to something. Our guide on how to stop unwanted Telenor subscriptions walks through checking and removing those.
A quick word of caution
Most flash SMS on Telenor are legitimate operator messages. But scammers occasionally imitate the format — urgent-sounding pop-ups claiming you’ve won something or must verify your account. Real operator messages won’t ask for your bank details or OTP codes. When in doubt, dismiss the message and verify through the official app or 345 instead of tapping links.
Wrapping up
Flash SMS is one of those small annoyances that feels way bigger than it is, simply because it hijacks your whole screen. But it’s a two-minute fix: SIM Toolkit first, the app and 345 as backup. Once it’s off, your screen is yours again.
